🚨 The internet needs you 🚨

You’re up again, Tumblr.

Back in 2015 you demanded that the FCC adopt strict net neutrality rules and establish a free and open internet. And you won

That should’ve been the end of it. But apparently not.

The new head of the FCC wants to undo the net neutrality protections you fought so hard for.

His proposed changes open the door to your web traffic being slowed down, or even blocked altogether. You could be forced to pay extra to use your favorite apps. You could even be prevented from getting news from the sources you trust.

Title II protects consumers and democracy by ensuring all voices can be heard.

You know the drill. Here’s what to do:

The FCC is taking comments from the public, and dearfcc.org is making it as simple as possible for you to make your voice heard.

Go there now 👉 dearfcc.org ✌️

You’ll just need to provide a name, an address, and then say a little bit about why rolling back Title II protections is a bad idea. If you’re not quite sure what to write, here’s something to get you started:

I’m writing to urge you to keep our Open Internet rules based on Title II in place. Without them, we could lose the internet as we know it.

The proposed changes to FCC rules would allow fast lanes for sites that pay, and force everyone else into slow lanes. We’ve already seen access to streaming services like Netflix, popular games like League of Legends, and communication platforms like FaceTime slowed down, or even blocked. Conditions like this hurt businesses large and small, and penalize the users who patronize them.

The changes also open the door to unfair taxes on internet users, and could also make it harder for blogs, nonprofits, artists, and others who can’t pay up to have their voices heard.

Please leave the existing net neutrality rules based on Title II in place.

Thank you!

If you need more ammo, feel free to quote these experts from our net neutrality Issue Time. TechCrunch and Battle for the Net also have some good starters.

Everyone is counting on everyone else here. Do your part and tell the FCC to keep a free and open internet under Title II.

PLEASE let the #FCC hear from YOU about #NetNeutrality !

I offer Some Thoughts on WHY NET NEUTRALITY MATTERS TO ME … + … YOU :

TUMBLER LANGUAGE :

“ We need the FCC to defend the rights of millions of Internet users by upholding net neutrality protections.

The FCC should throw out Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to give the government-subsidized telecom giants like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon free rein to create Internet fast lanes, stripping consumers of the meaningful access and privacy safeguards we worked for and so recently won.

I’m afraid of a “pay-to-play” Internet where ISPs can charge more for certain websites because users will have fewer options and a less diverse Internet. Thankfully, the existing net neutrality rules mean that ISPs can’t slow or block Internet users’ access to certain web services or create Internet “fast lanes” by charging websites and online services more money to reach consumers faster. That’s exactly the right balance to make sure competition in the Internet space is fair and benefits small businesses and consumers as well as entrenched Internet companies. Pai’s proposal would transform ISPs into Internet gatekeepers with the ability to veto new expression and innovation. That’s not how the Internet was built, and that’s not what we want. ”

From Cali Lili :

“I have always been a "student” … and also a communicator … this is not only a completely indispensable function of my work … but life in general.

The free and fair internet has made meaningful work and self – expression democratically available to all of us in this democracy. Without it … we would widen the inequality gap that is already challenging our nation.

In order to maintain the standards of excellence for which this country is known … we absolutely MUST make learning, communicating and small business operations available to every individual no matter what is in their bank account ….

Small businesses, an educated populace, science, math and equally crucial to our civilization and nation : the Humanities … as in, HUMANITY … arts, communications languages, ideas … there must be no gate-keeper in this aspect of our lives.

At a time when the gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” is more pronounced than ever ( and the obscenity of that widening gap, leaving individuals without healthcare, homelessness on the rise … while large corporations and their CEO’s are paid ever larger and unchecked Wall Street dollars … ) any form of restrictions such as those proposed … may cause the actual loss of life to those who are hanging on by a fingernail, to their small businesses, their educations, in short, their dreams.

The internet is and must remain as ubiquitous and essential as the telephone … which makes it also a SAFETY issue …

With natural disasters and weather alerts becoming more frequent and severe … any form of restrictions to communication of any kind may leave additional blood on the hands of those who seek to strangle it.

I urge you to keep Title II net neutrality in place, and safeguard Internet users like me.

Sincerely,
Cali Lili “
