I grew up in awesome NYC – which is ‘ my hometown as much as
losangeles is my smalltown ‘
Even as a multicultural kid – I felt a burning need to illustrate fierce inclusion + diversity … the featured couples appear back to back on one piece of paper — they are drawn literally “back to back” … One couple is light-skinned + the other pair are dark-skinned/ .black
They both say the same dialogue – they have each other’s backs – connected by their love … a portrait of unity – umoja sisterhood brotherhood + humanity
I’m proud of ‘that little girl ‘ I referenced in my writings since 2012 – she was going through so much hell and found solace in opening her eyes + telling it like it is …
I work daily –
to make her proud of me ….”
