How The #Word #Lesbian Might Be Considered #Offensive In Some Public Settings ;
#Shame #Bias #Prejudice Might Be #Encoded in the #DNA of both #Culture and #Technology :
As my Films, Music and Books, deal with Lesbian, LGBT, Women, CivilRights and Human Rights Themes, I attempted to include the word “Lesbian” in certain sections of my profile on TedTalks and I kept getting an “error message” that read : ” the text you have entered has been deemed offensive .”
I blushed. For The Wrong Reasons.
I am not trying to blow this up into Drama.
I am simply, thrown off.
I feel this topic has a Larger, More Universal Relevance, than “how I feel.” This Is A Matter of Concern for anybody who might Identify with a Community that is inexplicably “deemed offensive” by some Heartless Archaic Misogynist Cultural Construct.
I have asked Ted On Twitter to update their automated message.
I generally consider myself “Label-Free,” but, among other Communities, such as , ”Feminist,” and even though My “skin” is closer to the colour known as “Rose-Gold,” with my poly-cultural heritage, I identify with the “African American” Community more than I do with “White,” and – … I also identify with the “Lesbian” Community.
As I have been learning about my own orientation for the past few, challenging years, and recently felt pretty great about it all … it was odd, how “shamed” I felt, when I read those words “deemed offensive.”
I was with a group of “mixed orientation friends,” introducing them to the TedTalks Site. Someone suggested that I include the Word “Lesbian,” which was noticeably absent from My Profile On the Ted Site, to better describe my Films, Music and Books.
I then – remembered, still blushing, that I hadn’t been able to input the word “Lesbian” when I first signed up for Ted. Back then, I was less aware of my own orientation and suffering from a large bout with that Monster Known as : “Shame.” I thought the Ted Site might “kick me off” for even trying to use that word.
I had been a scholarship student, won awards, and now I felt like, maybe I’d get … “suspended” … which, if you know what “Shame” feels like, yeah, it’s like a “suspension” of a sort …
I decided not to “go there” this time.
Still blushing as I write this, but that’s ok.
FOR ANYBODY Who Is “Shamed” As A Result of Your Orientation Or Your Innocently “Doing You,” Standing Up For Your Rights, Not Harming Anybody In The Process : It’s Up To YOU, to – “not go there” and to find your way up and out of that Private Shame. Support from others is GREAT and NECESSARY, but only I can make that quiet choice to embrace myself.
Then, as testament to the strides I’ve made these past few years, I realized that it was more important to me, that I do something to prevent another girl, whose frame of mind might be fragile, from feeling “Shamed.” This applies for any similar circumstances, – for girls or boys.
I have learned, from my own experience and from research for my indie feature film about exactly this topic, ( my film examines the awakening of female sexuality and how it relates to “shame,” ) it can affect different women in a variety of ways and often it leads to self-destructive behavior.
I strongly suggest that “deeming” the word “lesbian” to be “offensive,” is a destructive response to a non-destructive word.
Part of my film’s trademarked title is “this female is not yet rated” and I’d like the world to join us in that quest.
Thank you Ted, for all the good that you do …
I am sure that your web technicians can take care of that reactive, reflexive automated message, which, unfortunately seems to have encoded into our very technology, a societal and cultural bias that expresses an automated rejection reflex to the word “lesbian.”
In a sense, perhaps we all have a bit of this reaction ?
Like many examples in society and culture, this reaction is likely embedded, encoded within the genes, in the culture’s very DNA.
I am normally against “genetic engineering,” but in this case, as in all cases of eradicating prejudice and bias, a little “genetic engineering” can help us along.
